Strategy 1:

Set clear expectations--course goals, assignments, attendance, participation, etc.--at the start of the course, through the syllabus and in class. It is good to be consistent and fair with these expectations throughout the semester and reiterate your expectations at various points during the semester (e.g. mid-semester).

Strategy 2:

Share lecture materials (i.e. Powerpoints, images, and videos) with students ahead of class.

Strategy 3:

Share questions for assigned readings and/or class discussion ahead of class; or provide a few minutes for students to think over these questions before responding.

Strategy 4:

Build in time for students to think and reflect on material during class.

Strategy 5:

Consider incorporating several chances for students to learn material.

Strategy 6:

Use the board--whiteboard, blackboard or projector--to your advantage and to help students.

Strategy 7:

Lay out the agenda/overview at the beginning of each class meeting. During class, you might also want to have clear transitions from one topic or discussion to the next so students are aware of which part of the agenda you are on at any time during the class.

Strategy 8:

Try to make explicit connections to other courses, concepts, and fields.

Provide multiple avenues for students to give feedback.
