Strategy 9: Asking for feedback.

Why do this?

Different students will have different comfort levels in regards to discussing their progress in the course and what teaching strategies are working well for them. These students would especially benefit from having many opportunities for them to reach out to you and provide feedback. Getting feedback allows you to learn about the needs of the students in your class. In addition, it helps the students feel more engaged, and lets you learn how to teach them best. It can also help you become a better teacher in general! Asking for mid-course feedback is important because course activities will be fresh in the students’ minds at this point, which will allow them to better articulate what is and is not working for them. Finally, having students think about what is working for them helps them evaluate their own progress and how they have contributed to their own learning in the course (you can include this as a question on the feedback!).

How do I do this?

Trust that students know how they learn best and understand what they want and need in the classroom. Give them the space to tell you about this! Feedback can come in many forms as well as at various points in the semester. You can seek this out in ways such as holding a class discussion or sending out an anonymous survey. Potential survey questions may include: What course structures or practices best contribute to your learning?; How do you learn from the professor and from other students?; What are your goals for the course? Mid-semester is a great natural point to ask for feedback, allowing students enough time in their course to gather thoughts as well as leaving enough time for you to make any appropriate adjustments. Consider the many ways in which students can give this feedback (e.g. meetings with you, in-class forms, online forums, etc.). In addition, be sure to address the feedback in class after you take the chance to review it.
