Strategy 7: Class Agenda

Why do this?

Starting each class with the agenda can help orient students to the material for that day. Specifically, by knowing what will be covered, students will have a better understanding of which readings and prior information they should think about during that class. In addition, without clear transitions, students might find it harder to engage in the class because they might be thinking about a previous topic or discussion theme. This both ensures clarity and gives students a sense of what to expect from the class that day.

How do I do this?

In laying out an agenda, it might be helpful to give an overview of what your lesson will cover in the beginning of class. This may involve putting the main objectives of your lesson either on the board or your PowerPoint at the start of your lecture. It could also simply involve speaking about these points at the beginning of class, or take the form of a list of bullet points with the main topics for the day. You can refer back to the agenda throughout class by using transition phrases such as "Now that we have had a chance to talk about _______ we can segue into thinking about ______." or "The next item on our agenda today is to ______." Often referring back to the agenda and the context you provided at the beginning of class can be a helpful way to signal clear transitions.
