Strategy 4: Time to think and reflect in class.

Why do this?

This is helpful for students who might need a little longer to think, or are overwhelmed by people constantly speaking. This can also be useful for you, as the professor, to gather your thoughts and plan on what you are doing next. Building in brief moments of silence can benefit everyone in the classroom for many reasons. Students can take the time to finish copying down notes, look through their notes to fully gather their thoughts, jot down ideas they would like to bring up to the class, and more. Providing this time in class can result in more thoughtful and reflective answers, comments, and questions from students. In the example provided below, writing and talking in pairs also caters to introverts in the class, who may be uncomfortable talking in larger group settings, but flourish in small group settings. Finally, bringing the group together allows people with different insights to come together and share what they have learned.

How do I do this?

One method of doing this is through a “Think, Pair, Share.” First, give students a few minutes to reflect on a question that you pose based on reading that they have done or on a class discussion. Have them write down a few thoughts. Then, have students pair up and discuss what they reflected on for a few minutes. Then, bring the class together and have them discuss as a big group what was talked about.
