Strategy 6: Using the board.

Why do this?

Using white/chalkboards or PowerPoint slides not only help students take more effective notes and pay more attention in class, but also allow for you to more easily organize and conduct lessons. In addition, making written text accessible is important because it can help students who wear glasses, students with visual impairments, and generally can help students focus in class (especially when key terms are in bold or highlighted).

How do I do this?

Depending on the structure of the course, using the board can look very different. If you prefer to not use a projector, you can write key concepts on the board during the lecture/discussion. Alternatively, you can make use of PowerPoint slides on a projector and use these slides to structure or support your lesson.
Regardless of which method you choose to use, it is important to consider the accessibility of written text. As such, when writing on the board, try to make your writing larger and use colors that will easily stand out on the background (yellow on a whiteboard can be difficult to see, just as is purple on a blackboard). Similarly, on slides, dark text on a white or light-colored background is the easiest to see. You can make use of different features (e.g. changing the color, bold, underline, etc.) to draw attention to key concepts.
