Strategy 5: Several chances to learn.

Why do this?

This gives students multiple chances to grasp and metabolise the material. As a result, if a student did not fully understand a concept the first time around, they have more opportunities to realize this gap in their understanding and fill the gap. It also shows multiple perspectives on the same information, allowing students to form a more holistic understanding. This can be especially helpful when learning about larger concepts that bring together several pieces of information.

How do I do this?

You can assign readings on the material--along with discussion questions for students to consider--to be completed in preparation for class. In class, the lecture/discussion serves as another point at which students can learn and process the material. Then, providing a problem set or question for students to work through in class gives them another chance to learn the material. This problem set or question could spill over into time that students spend outside class working on the material. Consider posting slides on Moodle or recording lectures to allow students to revisit the material if they need.
