Strategy 2: Accessible Course Materials

Why do this?

Some students may have visual impairments that require them to use a screen reader, so they need PDFs that are compatible with them. PDFs with smudges, highlighting, or that are crooked will not work with screen readers. Every student needs to have access to the course materials at the same time. Furthermore, ensuring that everyone can use your course materials regardless of accommodations and impairment improves the classroom experience. It is easier to be aware of a text’s accessibility before using it, as opposed to having to change it last minute for an accommodation. For videos, having closed captions on is a necessity for students with hearing impairments. Additionally, closed captions help students whose first language is not English and students who find reading along to be beneficial to them. Having accessible resources is necessary for students who require accommodations, but they benefit everyone.
